My favorite fall event is here again in Grand Rapids: ArtPrize! The two week festival is my favorite part about living close to the city. For the past three years I have been able to explore the area and witness some of the most unique pieces of art from so many different mediums. Sculptures, mirror illusions, suspensions, canvases, quilts, animations, optical illusions, etc. Art is exhibited all over the city in museums, bars, parks, office spaces, theaters, hotels, bridges, and even laundromats.
To me, a quality piece of art is something that makes me ask the question, "How in the hell did they come up with that?" The weirder, the better in my eyes. Walking into a room with kitchen pots and pans hanging from the ceiling with red yarn scattered throughout the room is an odd sight to see for most, but to me it's hilarious, captivating and one-of-a-kind.
My favorite piece from Rosa Parks Circle was located within GRAM (Grand Rapids Art Museum). The exhibition, "Intersections" by Anila Quayyum, was hands down one of the most captivating pieces I've seen in a while. Its simplicity and beauty made the entire room of people fall quiet. Located in the center of the room was a massive suspended cube made from steel with a single light bulb in the middle. The entire room projected abstract and geometric designs and shadows of interlacing patterns all over the walls, ceiling and floor of the exhibit.
I am fortunate I was able to bring Morgan and Nina to the art festival, visiting from MSU. We spent the day walking around the city, indulging in Madcap Coffee, and finishing off with dinner at The Bob.
